Finals
The finals of the Young Investigator Award were held on Wednesday 22 October at the Adelaide Convention Centre.
The three finalists presented their research in 'lay language' to a general audience and were judged by a media panel representing television, radio and the press.
The winner of the 2008 Young Investigator Award was:
Dr Lisa Smithers, Medical Scientist and Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Women's and Children's Health Research Institute (WCHRI) and Flinders Medical Centre. Lisa was chosen as Young Investigator of the Year for her research examining how Omega-3 oils improve the way pre-term infants see the world.
The two equal runners-up were:
- Christopher Turner, Lysosomal Diseases Research Unit, SA Pathology (Women's and Children's Hospital campus) and PhD candidate, University of Adelaide. Christopher’s research involves the development of a therapy for a severe form of Muscular Dystrophy known as Pompe Disease;
and
• Dr Lachlan Moldenhauer, Research Centre for Reproductive Health, University of Adelaide. Lachlan's research explores the maternal immune response in establishing a healthy pregnancy.
Lisa received a $10,000 prize (The Hon Carolyn Pickles Award) from Carolyn herself and the two runners-up received $3,000 each from Gail Mondy, Chief Executive Officer, CYWHS.
